Over the last year and a half, the freedge has continued to thrive with the aid and generosity of local organizations, community groups and neighbors, as well as the Newton Food Pantry’s daily restock of milk, eggs, bread, yogurt and produce. On Average, 11 shoppers visit the freedge per hour for supplemental food and personal care items.

According to Ephraim Ezekiel, freedge Coordinator, the freedge is essential because of increased food insecurity in many parts of Newton. “Some people don’t speak English and are not aware of other resources, such as the Newton Food Pantry,” he says. Others like having the freedom to supplement their supplies when necessary and with these “uncertain times of high prices and inflation, the freedge is an even greater resource”.
