As a person who grew up not seeing many people who looked like me in school or work environments, I know how impactful it is to see and interact with someone who looks like me or speaks the same language or really understands because they have a similar background.

What makes you smile when volunteering at the Newton Food Pantry?

I enjoy speaking my very rusty Cantonese with clients that come in and how much they appreciate hearing it.

Why do you think diversity is important in places like food pantries?

They are so important!!! Pantries should be seen as people helping each other, not just white folks giving food to people of color. Newton’s demographics have changed a lot over the past 20 years and community groups should reflect that in staffing and administration.

“The world is constantly evolving and the Newton Food Pantry should be as well. Social awareness and justice is long overdue, and if we ever want to reduce and eliminate hunger, we should start with ourselves and stop putting things off thinking things were so great back in the day.” –Amy Yok-Ming Wong
