Originally from Argentina and currently working as a Spanish medical interpreter at Boston Children’s Hospital, Bernarda has a long history with the Boston Marathon. Since moving to Boston 21 years ago, she has spent nearly every year at the marathon as a spectator or volunteer. After many years of listening to runners’ stories and admiring their effort, dedication and passion, Bernarda decided to run the race herself alongside some of her close friends.

Bernarda does not consider herself an experienced distance runner, but she likes to try new things and take on new challenges. She started jogging during the pandemic and worked her way up to running the Cambridge Half Marathon. The Newton Food Pantry then asked Bernarda if she would consider running the Boston Marathon on its behalf, and she happily agreed.

Bernarda is a long-time volunteer at the Newton Food Pantry. When she first started more than 10 years ago, the Newton Food Pantry was based in the basement of the Waban Library Center. Along with her three sons, Bernarda regularly helped sort food and organize food drives. When she learned there was a need for Spanish speakers to interact with clients and select culturally appropriate food, she enthusiastically answered that call as well.

“One of my favorite things about the Newton Food Pantry is that people of all ages, languages and cultures come together to support each other with compassion and respect,” says Bernarda. “The need for the Newton Food Pantry’s services here in Newton have grown so much in the past few years, which has really motivated me to run to support this wonderful organization.”

We are so grateful to Bernarda, who has raised more than $8,500 to date for the Newton Food Pantry. Please donate today to help her reach her fundraising goal of $10,000!
