I wanted to further support the mission of the Newton Food Pantry. I have experience and expertise which I thought might be helpful. I also felt that the board was committed to doing the right things in furtherance of the mission.

Are you involved in the community in other ways?

Yes, I am also on the board of the Newton Foundation which oversees the operation of the Newton Commonwealth Golf Course.

Why do you believe gender equality is important in food pantries?

Food insecurity is gender-neutral. We have to create an environment that meets the needs of everyone in need and allows them to be themselves and feel welcomed. What they are dealing with is hard enough. The Newton Food Pantry should feel like a safe haven.

Do you have any female leaders or mentors you look up to and or admire?

I admire Governor Healy. I was an early supporter of her when she first ran in the primary for Attorney General. She is smart, committed and wants to make a difference in people’s lives. I have long admired Condoleezza Rice, Angela Merkel and other women leaders. They’ve persevered and established themselves in the public sector. They’ve been able to make a difference with integrity in a very tough environment.

Do you consider yourself a female leader?

I was a leader in the energy industry, where I worked for over 35 years. I held several leadership positions in government and the private sector. Regardless of the interests of the organization I worked for, I always stayed true to my beliefs and spoke out about what I thought should be done in the best interest of consumers and the public interest. Leadership is about legacy. When I retired, I was proud of what I had achieved in the industry and felt I made a difference. I volunteered for the Newton Food Pantry because I see an opportunity to make a difference there as well.

What is your favorite volunteer task at the Newton Food Pantry?

I particularly enjoy the work with home delivery clients. I have gotten to know them, particularly their likes and dislikes and always try to find a little something special to bring them.
