Food insecurity can be challenging both mentally and physically. Most families give up their choice of food in order to be able to eat, since what is available and affordable doesn’t always line up with their values or cultural preferences.
The Newton Food Pantry Board of Directors has concluded that to best meet the increased and additional, unmet demand of Newton residents, the organization must begin the process to hire a full-time Pantry Manager. The unrelenting need in our community has made it impossible to remain an all-volunteer-run nonprofit without paid staff.
Food insecurity is an overlooked reality on college campuses. In fact, according to the Born This Way and Swipe Out Hunger Foundation, over 35% of college students have said that food insecurity has hindered their ability to study at some point, and 51% have had to reach out to family for food support.
“Hunger is a problem that is always hiding in plain sight, including in Newton. That’s why I am running the Boston Marathon in support of the Newton Food Pantry,” says Paul Stewart, our 2022 Boston Marathon runner.
