For Brenda Lee, access to fresh food is more than culinary preference — it’s a necessity. At age 83, Brenda and her husband are focused on maintaining their health and independence. She says the Newton Food Pantry plays a key role in helping them do both.
The Lees have deep roots in Newton. They moved to the city in 1979 and raised their five kids here, building a life centered on family and community. In 2023, they moved to independent senior housing at 2Life Communities’ Golda Meir House in Auburndale. Although they no longer drive — the Lees’ adult children now help them get around — they remain active and engaged throughout the city.
Their connection to the Newton Food Pantry began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they accessed home-delivery services. As soon as they could, the Lees began coming to the pantry themselves to select their own produce, meats and other foods. What started as a necessary resource has since become an important and uplifting part of their lives.
“We look forward to the outing (to the Newton Food Pantry) and appreciate being able to choose from a variety of foods ourselves,” says Brenda, who immigrated to the United States from Guangzhou, China in 1962. Having the opportunity to select their own groceries adds a sense of independence and dignity to the experience, she adds.
“I especially appreciate the fresh vegetables and fruit available. It allows me to cook for myself,” says Brenda.
Cooking remains an important part of her daily life, offering both nourishment and a sense of continuity. She and her husband also enjoy the prepared meals the Newton Food Pantry provides to all clients age 65+. The Newton Food Pantry purchase 150 meals each week from Rox Diner in Newton Highlands, which sells them to us at cost. Those heat-and-eat meals are distributed directly through our pantry.
For Brenda and her husband, the food they access from the Newton Food Pantry shapes their overall well-being. “Maintaining a healthy diet has become increasingly important so we can continue to enjoy this stage of our lives.”
